Submission Guidelines

WFR seeks literary submissions in fiction, memoir/personal essay and poetry, as well as visual art and comics, for our second issue.

No previously published work, literary criticism or translations, please. For prose pieces, no more than 4,500 words. Up to 3 pieces of flash fiction, totaling no more than 4,500 words, will also be accepted. Please submit no more than 3 poems or pieces of visual art. Comics should be limited to one page. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but please tell us in your cover letter and inform us promptly if your submission is accepted elsewhere. We prefer Microsoft Word documents with a 12-point font. Prose pieces should be double-spaced. Please mention in your cover letter the genre of your piece and include a brief bio.

Fiction submissions will be considered for the second annual Foundry Prize in Short Fiction, judged by Andrew Martin. The winner will receive $500 in addition to publication.

Andrew Martin is the author of the novel Early Work, a New York Times Notable Book of 2018 and a finalist for the Cabell First Novelist award, and the story collection Cool for America, longlisted for the 2020 Story Prize. He is a regular contributor to The Paris Review and The New York Review of Books, and has also published stories and essays in Harper’s, The Atlantic, The New York Times Book Review, The Yale Review, McSweeney’s, and elsewhere. He teaches in the Mountainview low-residency MFA program and in the Writer’s Foundry at St. Joseph’s University.

Poetry submissions will be considered for the second annual Foundry Prize in Poetry, judged by Laura Kolbe. The winner will receive $500 in addition to publication.

Laura Kolbe is a poet, physician, and medical ethicist practicing in New York City. Her debut poetry collection Little Pharma (University of Pittsburgh) won the 2021 Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize and was named among the best books of 2021 by the Boston Globe. Her poetry, fiction, personal essays, and criticism can be found in American Poetry Review, n+1, The Nation, The New York Review of Books, Poetry Magazine, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Yale Review, The New York Times Magazine, and elsewhere. Her work has also been featured in Best American Poetry 2022, on The New Yorker Radio Hour, on the Nocturnists podcast, on LitHub’s Thresholds podcast, and in the Yale University Press anthology A World Out of Reach: Dispatches from Life Under Lockdown. Her writing has been supported by fellowships from the Calderwood Foundation, MacDowell, and the James Merrill House. She lives in Brooklyn.

All other contributors will be paid a $50 honorarium.

WFR charges a small submission fee. If you are experiencing financial hardship or are not able to pay for any reason, please email writersfoundryreview@gmail.com with the phrase “Fee Waiver 2022” in the subject line before submitting, and we will send you a link to a waived submission form.

The submission period is November 1, 2022–January 3rd, 2023. Please submit only once during this period. Expect a response in 2 to 3 months.
