The Canopy Review is an annual literary journal that acts as a space for groundbreaking literary work. It includes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and non-traditional stories across all genres and styles.

Submission Guidelines

Please submit all creative work through Submittable. Simultaneous submissions are accepted. If your work is accepted elsewhere, please contact us immediately by withdrawing your submission through Submittable.

We only consider unpublished work. Please do not submit pieces that have been published on your personal blog, on Facebook, in other magazines or journals (including those online), in an anthology, or chapbook.

Individuals previously affiliated with the College of New Rochelle or St. Joseph’s College should not submit to The Canopy Review until they have been unaffiliated for five years. This includes students, staff, and faculty.

Literary, genre, chapter excerpt, etc.

Up to 6,000 words

Form, free verse, lyrical, prose poetry, etc.

3 to 5 poems

Memoir, essay, hybrid essay, etc.

Up to 6,000 words

Short Pieces
Flash fiction, micro essay, one act plays, etc.

Up to 1,500 words

Visual Art

3 to 5 pieces

We read submissions as quickly as we can, but due to the changes brought forth by Covid-19, and as a magazine run by students and volunteers, our response time may be longer than usual. If you have an urgent question regarding a submission, you may contact the editorial team. 


We ask for first North American serial rights and non-exclusive electronic rights for our website. We do not consider work that has been previously published in print or online. Rights revert to the author upon publication. Each piece may be published in our online issue and will be considered for forthcoming print issues.
